Opened in 1972 in concurrence with the larger Uris Theatre (now named the Gershwin), the Circle in the Square Theatre was built for the off-Broadway company of the same name. The theatre, designed by architect Allen Sayles, is distinctive in its thrust stage and its intimate capacity of 650 seats. Their 2005 production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee set a house record with 1,136 performances.
